A Widow’s Game Review – A Slow-Burning Thriller That Strikes Deep

Image
Not every thriller needs high-speed car chases or constant shootouts to keep you hooked. A Widow’s Game (2025) proves that sometimes, the quietest stories hit the hardest. This Spanish-language drama takes its time, inviting viewers into the fractured world of a woman who’s lost everything—or so she thinks. Carmen Machi plays the grieving widow whose sorrow is pierced by unsettling discoveries. Her husband’s death might not have been an accident. And someone knows more than they’re saying. The brilliance of A Widow’s Game lies in its pacing. Every scene builds tension without rushing it. Conversations feel like chess moves. You're constantly wondering who is genuine and who is lying through their teeth. Ivana Baquero brings added depth with a character that walks a thin line between comfort and chaos. The film’s cinematography, music, and editing combine to create a haunting, elegant experience that lingers long after the credits roll. If you love thrillers that slowly un...

Movie Review: Barry Levinson's 2025 Mob Drama:The Alto Knights

Image
The Alto Knights : Robert De Niro may need to sever professional ties with director Barry Levinson following their collaboration on The Alto Knights. Of course, they can remain friends outside of work. The duo has previously produced successful films such as Sleepers and Wag the Dog, but their recent projects, including What Just Happened? and the television film The Wizard of Lies, have been disappointing. Their latest effort, The Alto Knights, chronicles the lives of mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello during the 1950s. The film feels so excessively clichéd that it is truly remarkable that it was ever produced. It is worth noting that the film brings together the talents of De Niro, Levinson, and screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi, all of whom have contributed to iconic crime dramas over the past twenty-five years. De Niro even takes on the dual roles of Genovese and Costello, utilizing heavy prosthetics to portray a younger version of himself. However, to label Levinson and De Ni...

Mickey 17 by Bong Joon Ho

Image
Mickey 17 Mickey 17 on Afdah , directed by Bong Joon Ho, is a science fiction satire that thoughtfully explores themes of politics, class struggle, and environmental issues. True to Bong Joon Ho’s signature mix of humor and tension, the film reflects the complexities of human nature. Set shortly, the narrative follows Mickey Barnes, who joins a colonization mission to Niflheim as an "expendable." His role involves participating in perilous trials that typically end in death. Remarkably, each time he dies, a new version of him, complete with all his memories, is created. While the concept, inspired by Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7, is intriguing, the film does not fully capitalize on its potential. The exaggerated portrayal of certain characters detracts from the overall narrative, and some themes feel somewhat contrived. Robert Pattinson's casting as the lead seems more influenced by the script than by his performance; his portrayal lacks depth and quickly becomes unremar...

The Electric State Movie Review

Image
The Electric State : This sci-fi adventure, which was directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, uses alternate history as its engine to journey around American wastelands in the 1990s.  Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown), a teenager, has experienced the rapid growth of technology, a robot rebellion, and the consequences that followed. As a result, humans, led by tech mogul Ethan Skate (Stanley Tucci), separated disobedient robots into what is now known as the Exclusion Zone.  However, Michelle believes her brother Christopher is dead, so she sets out to find him after meeting Cosmo (Alan Tudyk), a robot that was programmed by him.  Before the adventure begins, she joins forces with cocky smuggler Keats (played by Chris Pratt) and his robot friend Herman on the trip to Exclusion Zone. The film on Afdah opens with a disheartening exchange between Michelle and Christopher, poorly executed by both Brown and Norman. Their performance is hindered by the lackluster dialogue crafted by scre...
